The Sinking of the Sewol, South Korea

According to the Article 10 of Seafarers’ Act, a captain has to remain on board until all the passengers have disembarked. 
 
But, 
 
The captain Lee Joon-seok of the Sewol was the first one to abandon the ship before the passengers. He abandoned the ship 30-40 minutes after it started listing. The captain, 69, is probably not the best suited for the job because he is no longer agile and can't think fast or logically except to save his own skin. For the past 20 years he has been navigating the sea labelled as “expert” in navigation. Now? People might label him expert in escaping a sinking ship.

During the initial interview with the captain, according to the report, was drying his wet banknotes -that’s good for him but for the passengers trapped inside the boat---it’s really tragic! 
 
Out of 30 crew, 20 survived. Other crew that died reportedly tried to give up life jackets for other passengers and two of the crew Kim Ki-wong and fiancee Jeong Hyun-seon refused to leave the ship while trying to assist other passengers. 
 
The Sewol ferry was carrying 476 passengers and crew on a trip from the western port of Incheon to the resort island of Jeju. There were 339 students and teachers from Danwon school in Ansan on board. Only between 174-179 have been rescued. Among the early rescued was the assistant principal Kang Min-gyu who later took his own life in the pine tree using his own belt on Thursday April 17, 2014. On Monday April 21, 2014 the chief engineer was trying to end his life. Now the authorities are trying to keep an eye on him for further questioning. 
 
As far as we know the 6,835-tonne ferry sank about two hours after issuing a distress signal shortly before 9:00am on Wednesday April 16, 2014. If you think about it two hours will give everybody time to abandon ship or stay on the high level of the boat where the rescue teams can see them. The captain said that the current and the temperature of the water (12 C) would make survival difficult. However abandoning the boat would probably give the passengers a greater chance of survival rather than being trapped inside their cabins. 
 
The boat was thought to hit a rock as it made a sudden turn but officials are still investigating facts. 
 
There are 555 divers sent for the recovery of the bodies trapped inside the boat. There are 3 cranes, vessels and also helicopters to help speed up the retrieval operation. 
 
The death toll has now reached 156. 
 
Hope the captain can bear all the shame and the guilt as he was not on the bridge as this happened and he was first among those who escaped.

coffins exists in different places in Asia such as Indonesia, China
and the Philippines but I will talk about the hanging coffins in the
Philippines because this practice is somewhat full of weirdness in
that place.</div>

Ok... first when you are
old you are supposed to make your own coffin. If you are too sick to
make your own coffin other relatives will help make one for you. This
has been the tradition of the people from the Echo Sagada, Mountain
province, Philippines.</div>

The coffin that I am
talking about is a kind of coffin that is carved out from a tree
trunk. You have to find a big log and hollow it out as your very own
final resting place. It is sad making your own coffin but well---it
is the tradition they have been doing for so many centuries. So they
are probably used to it.</div>

When you die your body
will be squashed there in your resting place (the coffin you make).
Some of your bones will be broken but yeah it is the tradition so
it's ok. Even if you will try to carve a tree trunk wider or longer,
your bones will be squashed anyway because they will always put the
dead body in a foetal position inside your carved coffin.</div>

They believe that there
are many benefits of hanging your coffin in the cliff. They believe
that by hanging the coffins the dead will be more closer to heaven.
The dead can also watch other relatives since the dead bodies are up
high. Also, hanging coffins will not use up space on soils for
planting crops. Hanging the coffin can also stop robbers from
stealing other things valuable inside the coffin.</div>

They believe that the
young people will have spiritual success. Some family members will
carry the corpse to the coffin which will be in the cliff waiting and
the fluids that will flow out from the corpse is believe to give
talent and good fortune to the relative that will carry the body.

The dead will be dressed
in a family's favourite, colourful clothing so that in the next life
the relative can recognize that person.

there beside the coffin as part of their ritual. Then with the chair
and the coffin they will hoist your body up to the cliff. Some of

Good Friday - A time of Devotion or Fanaticism

Many Christian denominations observe holy week but I would say Catholics in the Philippines have the most interesting activities during this holiday. 
 
For most Christians the Holy week is a time to reflect Christs’ life on earth, his sacrifice, his death, his burial and his victory over death (resurrection). 
 
Commonly Christians do fast during holy week, those that do not fast, avoid eating meat and others try to repent for their sins and make atonement to God for their wrong doings and fulfil whatever promises they made for all the answered prayers they get. But some Filipinos do have their unique take on this holiday. 
 
Traditional Practices in the Philippines: 
Whip self (self flagellation) and walk bare foot: Some people covered their faces when they do this so that no one will recognize them and if you try to look at their faces, their sins will transfer to you. I am not scaring anybody! Don’t try to look.

The penitent whip themselves with strings or rope tied with bamboo strips or other kinds of wood that can inflict pain and make them bleed.

Walk barefoot to church: 
People walk miles away from their house barefoot not because they cannot afford to buy slippers or shoes but they will do this as a way of seeking forgiveness or being sorry for their sins.

Scoot on butts to church: 
This must be difficult to do; scooting on your butt to church. The roads in the Philippines are not all paved-so imagine yourself doing this on the stoney rugged road. Either way, this is how they think they can obtain mercy from God so every year they have to do this (butts will probably like you shredded a block of cheese).

Crawl on knees to church: 
Other people will choose to crawl on knees to go to church. They do this to also show their wish to be forgiven.

Sideways: there are people that do this when they want to curse someone. They crawl on knees to church and then pray for whatever bad things they wish they want to fall on a person and then light a candle. This act can be done during holy week or anytime. 
 
Carry the cross and be nailed to the cross: 
Many individuals do this every year to fulfill an oath they made to God for the prayers answered, example when they pray for healing for a loved with a promise that if God will grant their request they will subject themselves to be crucified every year.

As they carry the cross once in awhile someone will beat them. The weight of the cross that they carry varies, sometimes they weight 100 lbs, sometimes 280 lbs with a crown made from barbed wire. 
 
Other things they do on Good Friday: 
 
Amulets: 
This is also a time to test the power of the amulets. Many people make different kinds of amulets from different unique objects and with the Latin prayers these objects are said to have the power to protect the lives of the bearer. Even bullets and swords cannot penetrate skin when you have amulets. 
 
The person that says the prayer should have a pure heart because this can also affect the power of the amulets.

If you base your search for mate on physical appearance - the relationship will not last. If a person has a wrong motive for choosing someone, the relationship will also not end well. Bird strikes above 500 feet (150m) altitude are about 7 times more common at night than during the day during the bird migration. Civil Aircraft and Bird Strikes: November 23, 1962: United Airlines Flight 297 a Vickers Viscount 745D was a scheduled flight from Newark International <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newark_Liberty_International_Airport"></a><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newark_Liberty_International_Airport"></a>Airport (EWR/KEWR) to Washington D.C. with 17 people on board. At 12:24 P.M. it crashed northwest of Columbia, Maryland after striking a flock of whistling Swans while at 6,000 feet (1,800 m). The bird strike made the horizontal stabilizer separate, lose control then crash. The crashed killed all people on board. February 26, 1973: A private Learjet 24, registration N454RN, struck birds. It crashed after take off from DeKalb-Peachtree Airport in Chamblee, Georgia, United States. Before the crash happened the Air traffic control saw smoke coming out from the left engine and called the plane to notify them. The aircraft crew answered: N454RN: Don't believe we're gonna make it. The aircraft smashed into the roof of an apartment building then to the wooded ravine. There were 5 passengers and 2 crew on-board. One person on the parking lot was critically burned from the plane's fuel. Several cars were also destroyed. According to the investigation the aircraft had collided with cowbirds during takeoff. There were 15 dead birds at the end of the runway. The left engine of the cockpit area had bird residue and feathers on the windshield. The foreign objects from the birds damaged the cooling ports and the rotor. The engine stopped running. They discovered that the left engine had encountered 14 separate bird strikes while the right engine had five. Loud bangs were heard as the aircraft tried to takeoff. The dump site near this airport was still used despite the recommendation that was given to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in 1971 and that they should close it by August 1972 but the authority did not follow through. 
 The bird strike caused too much damage to the left and the right engines and made the plane impossible to stay in air then the pilot lost control of the plane. Everyone on board did not make it. November 12, 1975: From John F. Kennedy International Airport (NY) the pilot of Overseas National Airways DC-10 aborted the takeoff after gulls were sucked into one of its engines and the engine exploded. The pilot forced the plane to go back down as it was a few feet above ground. According to the report the tires of the plane blew out. The right landing gear collapsed, the right wing broke off and the engine fell off. The plane burst into flames as soon it landed. It says the flames reached upwards of 60 feet. The pilot was able to act quickly by getting the chutes out before the plane totally was engulfed in flames. All 138 (some reports say139) people on board got out safe from that accident. Following this accident the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) recommended the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) to evaluate the effect of bird ingestion on large high-bypass turbofan engines and the adequacy of engine certification standards.

The bird strikes also called aviation ingestion or BASH (for Bird Aircraft Strike Hazard) is a collision between an airborne animal and a human-made vehicle i.e. aircraft. Bird strikes have caused several fatal aircraft accidents with human casualties. Accidents occur when the bird hits the windscreen or is sucked into the engines. The annual damages have been estimated at $400 million within the United States alone and up to $1.2 billion to commercial aircraft around the world. Civil Aircraft Accidents caused by Bird strikes: September 7, 1905: This was the first bird strike reported. The aircraft struck a flock of red-winged blackbirds in Dayton, Ohio. April 3, 1912: Calbraith Rodgers was the first person to fly across the continental USA. He was the first person known to die as a result of a bird strike. The Rodgers' Wright Pusher struck a gull that caused the aircraft to crash at Long Beach, California. He was fastened under the wreckage and drowned. October 4, 1960: <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_Air_Lines">Eastern Airlines</a> Flight 375, registration N5533, was a Lockheed L-188 Electra aircraft crashed during takeoff from Logan International Airport in Boston, Massachusetts. Approximately six seconds after takeoff the aircraft met a large flock of starlings (20,000). The aircraft shifted to the left then resumed the runway heading and at 200 feet the air plane shifted left again and sank nose-up to about 100 feet in altitude. It then rolled to the left, the nose dropped, then the aircraft crashed. The bottom of the aircraft sank into the bottom of the Winthrop Bay. Fuselage broke into two pieces and were buried in the mud. The entire accident was so abrupt that it took less than a minute (six seconds) from takeoff to the plane's sinking in the bay. There were 72 passengers on the plane. Sixty two died from that crash. Hundred of birds were ingested into the engines making no.1 and no. 2 engines lose power and shut down, while engine no. 3 flamed out. Engine no. 4 did not develop full power at a critical stage of flight. The aircraft was unable to complete its take off because there was not enough power to make the plane to fly. Other birds crashed into the windscreen making it impossible for the pilot to see. The other sad part aside from the number of deaths was that the pilot was only a few weeks to retirement. From this accident the government and the industry were starting to see the danger of the bird strikes. There were policies put in place about the disposal of garbage and closing the dump-site near airports because they will attract birds that caused the plane accident. The wildlife management were also thought to be very important to lessen more bird strike accidents from happening to save planes and birds.
